Gold and Pearl
This suspended sculpture, crafted from gold and pearl, evokes Bahrain’s deep-rooted memory, historically connected to the sea and the beauty of its treasures. The pearl symbolizes the rich pearling heritage for which Bahrain was renowned for centuries, when the sea was a source of life and the cradle of stories that shaped the identity of the place.
Gold, in this work, represents value and permanence, while also reflecting Bahrain’s long-standing mastery in goldsmithing and jewelry making—an enduring craft passed down through generations, becoming an integral part of the community’s culture and aesthetics.
The elements of the sculpture hang gracefully within the space with poetic lightness, as if they were pearls swaying with the movement of the waves. Together, they form a visual dialogue between sea and memory, heritage and present, in an artwork that encapsulates Bahrain’s history and presents it through a contemporary artistic language.
This sculpture by the Portuguese artist Miguel Rodrigues was inaugurated at Abdullah Al Zayed House for Press Heritage, part of the Sheikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research in the city of Muharraq, in collaboration with Bahrain Gallery and AWC Gallery in Dubai.
